REMEC Youth Media Project

The REMEC Youth Media Project is a video, filming and editing course for young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). The centre is equipped with latest HD cameras and studio facilities.

In Winslade Estate Lewisham, South East London, where we are based the unemployment rate is very high. The project is of high importance and vital to the New Cross Gate area and its young people. There are a lot of young people between the ages 14-25 who are neither in education, employment or training because of:

• Lack of interest in mainstream education

• Underachieved due to poor attendance or truancy

• Bullying/Peer Pressure

• Not interested in academic work

• Prefers to learn practical hands – on skills

• Lack of qualifications after leaving school

• Lack of qualifications after exclusion from school

• Rate of unemployment in the local community

REMEC Youth Media Project is set up to serve as, a sort of alternate education project, for young people who need to obtain some life skills, but have been unsuccessful in mainstream school. REMEC Youth Media Project will also support young people who may have been excluded from school through disruptive behavior, including open defiance or refusal to conform with agreed school policies therefore having to be excluded from school/education without any formal qualifications. Having access to training opportunities is vital in this area where young people are facing barriers of social class, race, gender, nationality and disability. It will be harder to gain employment in their local community and beyond without any skills.

REMEC Youth Media Project believes it is important to provide a safe environment for young people in the local community where they will develop and grow while they learn and raise their aspirations. As young adults, it is important to create an environment where they are encouraged to continue learning while preparing for college or employment.

The course which REMEC Youth Media Project provides will cover the basic hands-on skills of video, filming and editing, where a young person will be provided with the knowledge of using modern high quality video cameras, filming and editing and creating movies for all events in a newly equipped editing suite, which the centre provides. Students will be able to complete the course within a 3 months period of two days a week.

The students will receive a certificate of attendance/achievement on completion of the course and will be able to take away a copy of their completed film work which they will be able to show as their portfolio to a potential employer or for progress into college or higher education
